education: stereotyping exercises

This simple exercise was developed by freshman students in a Civil Rights History class at the University of Mississippi.

Step 1: A group facilitator asks each person in the group to write down the generalized stereotypes about people of different races or ethnicities.

Step 2: Each person reads outloud the things they wrote down.

Students who have done this exercise report that the act of saying outloud the stereotypes about groups who are "other" than themselves helps them realize the ridiculousness of many of these stereotypes.

Another resource on stereotypes is the film "Ethnic Notions" by Marlon Riggs.
